EDWARD ZELMAN FRIM Passed away peacefully on April 29, 2020, at his home in Pittsburgh, PA, following a long battle with cancer. Edward Zelman Frim's life was based on three things - al shlosha d'varim: family, community, and education. Jewish values were so deeply infused within these three pillars that anyone who met him could declare with certainty, “Ed Frim was a mensch.” Ed grew up in Newton, MA, the son of Drs. Rosalind and the late Sumner Frim. Throughout his childhood and young adult life, Ed partook in many forms of Jewish education, inspiring the focus of his professional life. He loved his summers at Camp Yavneh, graduated with honors from the Prozdor, and, alongside his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University, received a Bachelor of Jewish Education degree from Hebrew College in Boston, as well. Through college and beyond, Ed spent summers working at Yavneh and Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, sharing his musical talents on piano and accordion to all the campers' delight. He received a degree in Public Policy Analysis from the University of Pennsylvania, and thereafter began working to support Jewish education through the local Jewish Federations in Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he served as the Executive Director of the Agency of Jewish Learning. Following these roles, Ed worked on several initiatives to make Jewish communal and educational spaces more inclusive of individuals with disabilities. Most recently, he served as the Head of School at the MetroWest Jewish Day School in Framingham, Massachusetts. Wherever his path led, Ed found his way to be an active member of Jewish communities of all types. Many were moved by his leyning and davening, especially those at Temple B'nai Israel in Monroe, Michigan, where he led High Holiday Services for over 20 years. Ed leaves behind his beloved wife of 28 years, Lori Abrams and his devoted daughter, Naomi Frim-Abrams, with whom he enjoyed playing music, and taking trips to State parks and historical sites. THE HONORABLE Q. TODD DICKINSON Age 67, of Washington, DC and The Plains, VA died on Sunday, May 3, 2020. He is survived by his husband, Robert H. Atkins and his brother, John D. Dickinson. He married Robert Atkins on July 9, 2017, following a two-year engagement and ten years as partners. The eldest son of John and Martha Dickinson, he was born on December 21, 1952, in Philadelphia, PA and spent his childhood in Mt. Lebanon, PA, where his family was active in the Southminster Presbyterian Church. He also spent many summers with extended family at his maternal grandfather's farm on the Rivanna River in Charlottesville, VA. Todd received a B.S. in Chemistry from Allegheny College, where he was also an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. From 1981 to 1990 Todd lived in San Francisco, CA where he served as in-house intellectual property counsel for Chevron Corporation. While there he was eager to support LGBT causes in a city with an out and increasingly prominent civically and politically engaged community. During these years he was a founding board member of the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF) and served on the National Board of Governors of the Human Rights Campaign Fund (now the Human Rights Campaign or HRC), co-chairing the 1985 San Francisco HRCF dinner. He was also appointed by then-mayor Dianne Feinstein to be the city's parking commissioner. In 1990, he moved to Philadelphia, PA, where he served as Chief Counsel for IP and Technology for Sun Company, Inc. (Sunoco) and later as counsel with the law firm Dechert Price & Rhoads. In Philadelphia, he was again active in numerous political, civic and professional organizations including the Liberty City Democratic Club, the Pride of Philadelphia Election Committee and the Gay and Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia (now the LGBTQ Bar Assn.). He was also a founding Master with the Benjamin Franklin Inn of Court for IP law in Philadelphia and advised the SAE chapter at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1997, he moved to Washington, DC, and joined the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In 1998, he was appointed by President Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Deputy Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks. The following year he was appointed and confirmed as Assistant Secretary and Commissioner. Shortly thereafter his titles changed and he became the first Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property & Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office following the enactment of the American Inventors Protection Act of 1999. In 2001, he joined the law firm of Howrey Simon Arnold & White as co-chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group, where he opened, recruited, and staffed the firm's new San Francisco office. In 2004, Todd moved to Westport, CT, and joined the General Electric Company as Vice President and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel. In 2008, he became Executive Director of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and returned to Washington, DC. In 2015, he joined the law firm of Novak Druce Connolly Bove + Quigg, which later merged with the law firm Polsinelli, PC. Beginning in the spring semester of 2019, he co-lectured a seminar in International IP Law at the George Washington University Law School. A passionate advocate for intellectual property law and the power of patents to spur innovation, Todd was active in numerous IP organizations and mentored and advised many over the decades of his career. At the time of his death, he served on the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Board of Visitors, the George Washington University School of Law Advisory Board on Intellectual Property and the Board of Directors of the Patent Trial and Appeals Board Bar Association, on which he'd served since its founding in 2016. During his time in Washington, DC, he was also an active Master with the Giles Sutherland Rich Inn of Court for IP Law. Among his many honors were his induction to the Intellectual Property Hall of Fame in 2012, and the naming in his honor of the Q. Todd Dickinson Inn of Court for IP Law in Pittsburgh, also in 2012. Todd was a loving and devoted husband, brother, uncle, and son. Throughout his life, he was always eager to make and sustain friendships. Although he ceased to be an active church member in adulthood, he maintained values that he associated with his Presbyterian upbringing: loyalty, honesty, thrift, and cocktails. To that he also brought his own sense of humor and genuine curiosity about people and the world around him. He loved reading, cooking (and eating), entertaining, traveling, plays, musicals and film, rooting for all Pittsburgh sports teams, collecting art and rhododendrons, corgis, and sharing them all with his close friends and family. MARGARET GEORGES Was born Margaret Elizabeth Gadomse in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1942. She was an only child, and survived by her mother, Delores and father, Peter. Margaret was a hard worker starting at the age of 16. She worked her entire life in various secretarial roles. She was efficient, a good communicator, and the fastest typist around. Margaret worked until her70s, and it was only her chronic pain, not her ambition that forced her to quit. Margaret was married to Raymond Georges for many years. They loved each other deeply. Margaret and Raymond tried for over a decade to conceive a child. A devout Catholic, Margaret prayed for many years to have a child of her own. Margaret and Raymond's only child, Meghan Inga Georges was born in 1982. Margaret was 40 years old, and Raymond was 52. Margaret and Raymond did not let the fear of being “older” stop them from being loving, involved parents. Meghan was the product of years of hope and of waiting and Margaret affectionately called her “miracle Meghan.” Margaret was overwhelmingly generous to her only daughter, Meghan. Meghan was always dressed in the best, most quality clothing. A pattern which continued because of Margaret's generosity for many years. Margaret would regularly tell Meghan “everything I have is yours.” She lived out this truth throughout Meghan's entire life. She and Raymond paid for Meghan's college education. After Raymond passed in 2001, Margaret maintained a sense of independence and resilience. She maintained a large family home for many years, simply to give her daughter a sense of consistency and shelter. This was no small task. Margaret continued to be consistently generous to her daughter Meghan after she finished school and started a career of her own in Social Work. Margaret's generosity continued until the final years of her life, when she graciously paid for Meghan's wedding to her now husband Dan. Margaret was overjoyed that her daughter married a wonderful, honest, kind man like Dan. She always feared that this day would come, when she would leave this world, and Meghan behind. She can rest knowing that Meghan is loved and cared for by Dan, and a family of her own. However, Margaret gave Meghan more than she realized. Margaret gave her daughter a sense of independence, resilience, and poise that will carry her in the days to come. Private family visitation MONDAY, 4-6 p.m., WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp. 15220. Mass of Christian Burial PRIVATE by family in S.S. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister, following his father into a life of service. He served congregations in Meadville, Bellefonte, and West Mifflin, before becoming a full-time chaplain at Allegheny General Hospital, where he served what he believed to be his true pastoral calling: compassionate support to patients and families in need. After retiring from full-time ministry, and moving to Washington, PA, Hugh continued to serve as an interim minister to churches in the Washington Presbytery, including The Church of the Covenant, where Marilyn was an active member. Beyond a devotion to his calling and his family, Hugh was a sports enthusiast and particularly loved attending high school and college athletic events. Spending time with family and friends, visits to Conneaut Lake and Massanetta Springs, and rhyming and singing with his children and grandchildren were among Hugh's greatest joys. SABATINO DiNARDO Age 82, of Brookline, formerly of Oakland, surrounded by his loving family after a valiant battle with colon cancer. He emigrated to America in 1956 from Gamberale, Italy, at the young age of 17. He began working as a laborer through Laborer's Union 1058. In 1961, he returned to the “old country” to marry the love of his life, Maria Bucci. Together they were married for 52 years and built a beautiful life together in America. Theirs was a true love story—built on pure love, mutual respect, and undying devotion—a love that all couples should aspire to attain. He subsequently became a United States citizen and went to work for J & L Steel Mill in Hazelwood and became a member of the United Steelworkers of America's union. He was a proud American, Democrat, and Union Member. He was a devout Catholic and a man of impeccable character—with a golden heart and a pure soul. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He never shied away from a debate on politics, religion, or morality. Life was pretty simple for him—“do what is right for people and you will never go wrong.” He was an avid gardener, with a sprout of his infamous fig trees even being housed at the Smithsonian Botanical Garden. He was happiest amongst family and friends, but his greatest joy came from being the proud “Papa” to his five grandchildren. He enjoyed feeding them, sharing his Italian heritage, and telling them jokes. One of his favorite sayings to them: “Always keep a smile on your face and leave people wondering what you are up to.” He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maria; his parents, Francesco and Nicola; and a brother, Donato (Giuseppina); survived to mourn his loss is a daughter, Franca (Robert) Mancine; a son, Sabatino, Jr. (Nancy); his grandchildren, Stephanie (Anthony) DeStefano; Gabriella (Jonathan) DiNardo Hash; Robert Mancine, III; Bianca DiNardo, Esq., and Sabatino DiNardo, III, and a sister, Ida (deceased Nino), and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
